What a Year!

12/29/2020

When the Community Music Center building closed in March due to Covid-19, CMC Inc. kept the music playing in our students’ and teachers’ homes. The non-profit put together a grant program so our exceptional teachers could bring online learning to life in fun and engaging ways, at whatever rate the student could afford. Instrument rental fees were also waived for everyone through the summer.

In July we had an online event (our first!) for our 2019-20 award winners and graduates, with the help of Pheadra Urban and No Vanity Productions, who created wonderful video content.

When Portland Parks & Recreation approved virtual programming this Fall, CMC Inc. supplied funds to re-hire instructors, and to support a ‘pay what you can’ system for students so as to lower barriers for those whose financial situation has been affected by the current economic conditions.

CMC also continues to engage with the East Portland community, reimagining programs that are designed for and by underserved communities, and supplying full-scholarship lessons to students in these neighborhoods.

A Portland Parks & Recreation Levy was approved by Portland voters in November. While specifics are being planned now for the ramp up to the levy, we know that levy funds will provide resources for CMC Inc’s general operations so that we can keep using donations to support additional music education access, such as equipment, resources, and services not covered by the Levy.
