Together Again

In-Person in the Park

The Community Music Center's Summer programs will focus on playing and singing in groups - something we haven't been able to do in a while!

We are bringing back our Community Choirs & Community String Orchestra, offering Free Range Youth Ensembles, and adding a new intergenerational Guitar Circle in Spanish -- all in Kenilworth Park (SE 34th & Holgate, just 3 blocks South of CMC).

On Zoom, too

Virtual classes and lessons will also continue through the summer.

Registration

See the list of music activities to enroll in on the Portland Parks & Recreation online registration site. Note to returning students from Spring: contact CMC staff at 503-823-3177 for assistance with Summer enrollment, as your classes might not be listed online.

Access

With resources from the Parks Local Option Levy (Parks Levy) passed by Portland voters in November 2020, Portland Parks & Recreation is transitioning to a service-driven model that focuses on racial equity and eliminates cost as a barrier for Portlanders who need our programs the most.

We recognize that cost can be a barrier to participation. Thanks to the passing of the Parks Levy, we are using a “Pay What You Can” option for summer 2021. It allows people to access flexible payment options based on their needs. This payment option does not require an application. Additional scholarship discount is available, too, thanks to the non-profit partner at CMC (call 503-823-3177 for more information).

Safety

Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R)'s primary goal is to keep the community healthy and to protect the public from the spread of COVID-19. All in-person summer programs are being designed to meet public health guidance and to be flexible as conditions change. Visit PP&R's COVID-19 Safety Practices to learn more about what protocols are being put in place.

Art Pods

Bringing Arts & Music to Portland Parks

We are excited to announce that CMC, in collaboration with Multnomah Arts Center (MAC) and PP&R's Free Lunch + Play, is mounting a community engagement program called Art Pods this summer at multiple parks in Portland. Four Art Pods will be deployed to over a dozen Free Lunch + Play sites this July and August, delivering enriching community arts and music experiences for free to younger children and their families. These self-contained mobile art studios will be led by MAC & CMC staff, professional arts instructors, and PP&R playground counselors.

Spring Concert and Annual Meeting

We will have a virtual program featuring many CMC student ensembles and honoring our graduates and awardees on Saturday, June 12th at 2 pm via Zoom webinar. See the announcement in our Press Room for more information and a link to view the event.

Fall at CMC

We are hoping for a return to the Francis Street building for the 2021-22 school year, pending State and local Covid regulations, when we can once again offer in-person activities for new-comers and new beginners as well as resume many of our traditional programs. Look for announcements and updates through the Summer.
